Here are a few of my basic “Rules of Thumb”.
These are my personal beliefs. I use inclusive language but that doesn’t mean I’m telling you what to believe. So… chill. lol
- Why?
Everything can and should be Questioned. Question anyone who suggests otherwise.
- This leans skeptical and can come off cynical – I use it to mean curiosity is natural and necessary. Understanding why we do things and how things work makes life easier.
- A Stagnant Belief is a rotted belief.
We, like everything else in the world, are constantly changing. Our ideologies should be as well. Which is why it’s important to question why we are doing certain things or why we believe certain things.
- Our beliefs and ideologies should change whether we are sculpting them into something stronger or we are dismantling them all together.
- Nuance
There is nuance in everything. While reductive thinking helps in certain areas, it’s important to always be open to nuance.
- Even here nuance is important. Not all situations call for leaving room for nuance. lol
- If they don’t know you personally, don’t take it personally.
If someone is giving you advice or critiquing you on the way you live… take it with a grain of salt. They don’t know you, so they are speaking from their own perspective. Their wants and needs may not align with your wants and needs, so don’t take it too seriously.
- Don’t yuck others yum.
If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. And that’s okay. There is no reason to tell someone else how to live their life. If all parties are consenting, and capable of consenting, it’s none of my business.
- However, We don’t tolerate intolerance.
- Respect is earned, not inherent.
Same goes for authority. The ability to lead someone is given, it cannot be taken.
- People are just people.
Doesn’t matter if they are from another country. Believe in a different religion, or none at all. Have a different sexual orientation. People are just people. We are a lot more alike than we are different.
- Which also needs to be noted for various jobs. Doctors are just people, actors are just people, Grocery clerks are just people. Personally, I don’t think people should be role models. You can admire someone’s specific qualities but a person as a whole should never be put on a pedestal.
- Always leave room for creativity .
Logic is needed. What is proven should be noted. Don’t forget to leave room for creative problem solving. Everything we know now came from someone thinking outside of the box, going against what was considered the norm. Try not to shove yourself into a box, to much confinement derails progress.
